The role of the agri-food industry for a 'Circular Bioeconomy'

Barcelona - Spain 24 February 2021 - 9:00am (GMT +01:00) Theme: EU competitiveness in the changing global competitive landscape

Through “New Green Deal”, the European Commission has launched a deep transformation of the European economic and social model. Among the different initiatives that are part of the ‘New Green Deal’, one of the most important issues is the reconversion towards a ‘circular bioeconomy’, consisting of the rational use of goods designed to last longer. It is, in short, to carry out measures throughout the entire life cycle of the products. The transition provides opportunities, but it also creates important challenges for the productive sectors, and these reforms should be considered from a pro-competitive perspective, promoting productivity and technological development, and better use of resources in economies such as agri-food. What are the economic sectors and activities that can lead your ‘circular’ transition? The circular bioeconomy will have net positive benefits in terms of GDP growth and job creation, as the implementation of ambitious circular economy measures in Europe can increase the EU GDP by an additional 0.5% by 2030 creating around 700,000 new job positions.
