President of the European Parliament
David Sassoli was born in Florence on 30 May 1956. In his early twenties, he started working as a journalist for small newspapers and news agencies. He then moved on to the Roman editorial office of the newspaper Il Giorno, where for seven years he distinguished himself by following the main political events and news. His career as a reporter began in 1992 as a news correspondent for Tg3 on national television. Subsequently he covered the news on Rai Uno and Rai Due, and in 1999 joined the editorial staff of TG1, as a special correspondent. During the ten years that followed, he managed the main editions of the news and coverage of major national and international events. In 2007 he became deputy director of TG1 and was responsible for the in-depth programmes ""TV7″ and "" TG1 Special ″. The whole time, he remained involved in educational associations, such as the Scouts and other Catholic youth movements. When the Democratic Party was born in 2007 he found it to be the right place to develop his political commitment. On 7 June 2009, he was elected MEP of the Democratic Party with over 400,000 preferences. He was nominated head of the PD delegation during that legislative term. In 2014, he was re-elected with over 200,000 preferences (60,000 in Rome alone) in the constituency of the Centre. On 1 July of the same year, he was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament with 393 votes, the second most voted in the PD-S&D quota, with responsibility for Mediterranean Policy, the Budget and buildings. As a member of the Commission for Transport and Tourism, he was the rapporteur for the European railway reform (4th Railway Package) and the Single European Sky. On 26 May 2019 for the third time, he was elected member of the European Parliament in central Italy with 128,533 votes. On 3 July 2019, he was elected President of the European Parliament.
